Tastes of Home is a multicultural community cookbook created by Saoirse Ethnic Hands through our Sanctuary Catering
project and published by Mercier Press, Ireland’s oldest independent publisher.
The book brings together more than 40 family recipes and personal stories from women from Afghanistan, Egypt, Ireland, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Serbia, South Africa and Ukraine who have made Cork their home.
For Saoirse, the book is about more than recipes. Food is a way of sharing culture, memories and experiences, and of creating connections between people. Each chapter tells the story of a woman and the food that connects her to home — from childhood kitchens and family celebrations to migration and building a new life in Ireland.
The recipes reflect the women and their different backgrounds, including Afghan Kabuli pulao and bolani, Moroccan tagines and chebakia, Ukrainian borscht, South African chakalaka, Mexican enchiladas and Irish brown bread.
Alongside the recipes and stories, the book includes practical advice on finding ingredients in Irish shops and markets, with suggestions for substitutions where needed.
Tastes of Home was photographed by Cork food photographer Emma Jervis, with recipes tested at Munster Technological University (MTU). The project was funded by Cork City Council and Creative Ireland.
